Bespoke designed packages from air source heat pumps suppliers

Terra Therma is an Essex-based accredited air source heat pump installation partner for Panasonic, Daikin, Steibel Eltron, Samsung EHS, CTC and Mitsubishi, all reputable suppliers of quality renewable energy system components.

We can provide you with an individually designed, supplied and installed package for your air source heat pump (ASHP) heating and domestic hot water system. Outside air, when at any temperature above zero, is a heat container and an ASHP utilises some of this heat to offer you an efficient way to provide hot water or household heating. An ASHP may be combined with a solar energy heating system to provide you with even greater efficiency.

Why Choose Us?

On Hand Support

For every customer that approaches us, our friendly team are on hand to provide support and advice no matter the query.

Approved Experts

We are approved by the Energy Saving Trust, so you can have full confidence that we’ll provide an excellent service for your domestic or commercial property.

Certified Equipment

We only work with MCS certified equipment and providers to install our thermal systems.

Advantages of Air Source Heat Pumps:

  • ASHPs use only around 25-33% of the electricity that a standard resistance heater uses for the same amount of heating, thereby reducing your electricity costs
  • ASHPs have few moving parts, reducing maintenance requirements, although the outdoor heat exchanger and fan must be kept free from leaves and debris
  • ASHPs run on electricity and so no flammable or potentially asphyxiating fuel is used at the point of heating, reducing any potential danger to users and removing the need to obtain gas or fuel supplies (except for electricity)
  • They may be used to heat air, or water
  • An air source heat pump system can be used for air conditioning in summer, as well as for heating in winter (known as a split or reversible system)
  • Lower running costs compared with conventional electrical resistance heaters

Alternative hot water and heating

Air source heating can provide low cost heating, and a high efficiency heat pump can provide up to four times the heat of an electric heater for the same electrical input. Our air source heat pump Essex services can also provide you with hot water from temperatures of 55°C (low temperature) or up to 80°C (high temperature). Required temperatures can be achieved on a predefined program.

Significantly lower harmful emissions

The overall costs of using air heat pumps should be considered carefully, as mains gas (where available) may be cheaper than electricity, although it has significantly higher harmful CO2 emissions. However, with the introduction of the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme for Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) approved units and installers, such as Daikin and Terra Therma, the benefits speak for themselves.

What is an air source heat pump (ASHP) and how does it work?

An air source heat pump (ASHP) is a highly efficient, renewable energy technology that provides heating and cooling for residential and commercial buildings. It works by extracting heat from the outside air and transferring it indoors to heat the space, or conversely, extracting heat from the indoor air and expelling it outside to cool the space.

What are the different types of air source heat pumps?

Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) come in two main types: air-to-air heat pumps and air-to-water heat pumps. Each type serves different purposes and is suitable for various applications, providing both heating and cooling options.

    • Air-to-Air Heat Pumps: Air-to-air heat pumps transfer heat between the outside air and the indoor air. In heating mode, the heat pump extracts heat from the outside air and transfers it to the indoor air. In cooling mode, it works in reverse.
    • Air-to-Water Heat Pumps: Air-to-water heat pumps transfer heat from the outside air to a water-based system. In heating mode, the heat pump extracts heat from the outside air and transfers it to water, which is then circulated through the building’s heating system. Some systems can also operate in reverse to provide cooling, but this is less common.

What are the main benefits of using an air source heat pump?

Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) offer numerous benefits for heating and cooling residential and commercial properties. These benefits make ASHPs an increasingly popular choice for those looking to improve energy efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and save on heating and cooling costs. Here are the main advantages of an air source heat pump:

    1. Energy Efficient: They’re much more efficient than traditional heating systems like electric heaters or oil and gas boilers.
    2. Cost Savings: Due to their high efficiency, ASHPs can significantly reduce heating and cooling bills.
    3. Environmental Benefits: ASHPs use renewable energy from the air, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and lowering greenhouse gas emissions.
    4. Versality: With both cooling and heating options for year-round comfort.
    5. Low Maintenance: ASHPs are generally low-maintenance systems, requiring only periodic checks and cleaning.

How does an air source heat pump compare to a ground source heat pump?

While both types harness renewable energy to provide efficient heating and cooling, they have distinct differences, some of which includes:

Heat Source:
    1. An air source heat pump extracts heat from the air outside the property.
    2. A ground source heat pump extracts heat from the ground via a network of buried pipes (ground loops).
Installation:
    1. Air source heat pumps are typically easier to install compared to GSHPs and requires less space for installation.
    2. Ground source heat pumps require excavation for the installation of the ground loops.

How does an air source heat pump work?

If you have only just started looking into investing in an air source heat pump for your property, you may have some questions about how they work. Luckily for you, Terra Therma are here to give you all the information that you need!

The air source heat pump works by absorbing heat from the outside air. This air is then transferred into a liquid refrigerant at a low temperature – and then, using electricity, it is compressed to increase its temperature. The final stage of the process sees it condense back into a liquid to release all of its stored heat. That heat can then be used to warm up your radiators or underfloor heating.

Are air source heat pumps classed as renewable energy?

More and more property owners are looking to heat their homes using renewable energy, and there are so many options out there for them to choose from. So, are air source heat pumps a kind of renewable energy technology? Yes, they are! They use a renewable natural source and do not rely on fossil fuels.

The temperature in the UK can vary wildly, but the great thing about an air source heat pump is that the air it draws in can be any temperature. So it’s something that will deliver all year round! If you want to find out more or have any questions, please check out our FAQ page or get in touch.
