Lakeside in Portsmouth has just got a new nursery, which is hoping to set a new standard in energy-efficiency and the use of renewables. The low-carbon nursery doesn’t need radiators, as its heating is controlled via an air source heat pump which transforms heat from the outside air into energy for the underfloor heating system throughout. Lighting is also strictly controlled, thanks to sensors that only allow lights on when rooms are in use. The only light switches in the building are found in the children’s sleep room.
The roof is also very green, covered in soil from the site, planted with grass and wildflower seed, meaning that soon it will not only be highly eco-friendly, but a riot of colour. The nursery officially opened on Monday, but was promoted with an open day at the end of September, where parents and kids were able to tour the building and meet CBeebies In The Night Garden’s stars Upsy Daisy and Iggle Piggle.
